  • Our technicians are always on-the-go in one of our mobile locksmith shops, so your wait time is minimal.

  • If you do prefer new hardware, or if your existing lock is damaged, we arrive in a van stocked with a full array of door hardware. You'll be able to look over our locks and doorknobs and choose the best options for your home.

General Steps for Rekeying a Residential Lock

  • First, we'll remove the screws and take both sides of the lock off the door. The deadbolt consists of the interior, thumb-turn side, and the exterior, flat piece where the key goes. A cylinder connects these two parts.
  • Next, we'll separate the cylinder assembly from the other pieces.
  • We'll disassemble the cylinder, removing all the pins. The pins are small rods whose arrangement mimics the shape of the key edge. There is a set of pins on each side (top and bottom) of the cylinder.
  • We'll place the new key in the plug (keyhole) and insert two new sets of pins to correspond with the shape of this new key.
  • Lastly, we'll reassemble the hardware and reinstall the deadbolt on your door. We'll repeat this process for each door as needed.

Why Should I Call the Experts at Local Lock & Key?

While it's tempting to try and do this yourself, the springs which hold the pins in place are tiny and delicate. They can easily be broken or lost, making the entire cylinder unusable. We'll help you save money with our affordable prices, and you'll be amazed at how quickly our experts can rekey your locks! With Local Lock and Key, you can sleep easy tonight, knowing you and your family are secure. Give us a call today.
